2014 Fall Trip – Queens, NY – Louis Armstrong Museum & Museum of the Moving Image
October 9, 2014 @ 8:30 am - 5:00 pm
There’s No Business Like Show Business….Come Find Out Why!
Louis Armstrong (don’t call him “Louie!”) could have lived anywhere in the world. He chose to live in Corona, Queens from 1942 until his death in 1971. The Louis Armstrong House is left intact as if he just walked out the door. Come with us today as we learn about this very remarkable and complicated man. I‘ll bet you didn’t know that he took up the coronet in 1912 when he was living at the Colored Waif’s Home for Boys where he was sent after shooting his stepfather’s gun in the air on New Year’s Eve. Learn more interesting facts about “Ambassador Satch” with our guided tour today.
Then we’ll head over to Flo’s Lounge for a full-served lunch. Flo’s was recently renovated after a fire in 2012. Now it’s a sleek, modern Greek restaurant, conveniently only a few blocks away from our final stop. Be sure and choose your entrée on the coupon below. Lunch will include a salad and dessert.
We’ll hop on the motorcoach and go to The Museum of the Moving Image, the only museum in the U.S. dedicated to exploring the art, history & technology of the moving image. It occupies one of the 13 buildings that comprised the former Astoria Studios, the site of hundreds of silent & early sound productions. Taken over by the Army in 1942 for training films for soldiers, it fell into disrepair until a restoration in 1977 returned it to production of feature films. The museum was founded in 1985 & had an extensive renovation in 2011. Even if you’ve been here before, there’s a lot of new things to see. We have a guided tour.
