NEW CASTLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY AND

NEW CASTLE RECREATION & PARKS - SPRING TRIP

WE'RE GOING TO JERSEY...AGAIN!

THURSDAY, MAY 10, 2012

We had so much fun in NJ last Spring that we decided to journey back to Jersey again. First stop is Craftsman Farms, the home of Gustav Stickley, a major figure in the Arts & Crafts Movement. Stickley was a designer, manufacturer, architect, publisher, philosopher and social critic. Craftsman Farms is a massive Log Home that was designed to be self-sufficient with gardens for vegetables and flowers, orchards, dairy cows and chickens. The produce grown on the farm was used in the restaurant operated by Stickley. (Sounds a lot like our local Stone Barns.) The 30-acre site is home to a massive collection of beautiful Arts & Crafts original pieces, which are right in style again.

Our luncheon will be served tableside at Grasshopper off the Green, an Irish Pub in Morristown. You probably won't want to eat for a couple days after this big lunch. Note: Choose your entrée on the coupon below when you sign up for the trip.

Then we're going to Acorn Hall, the current home of the Morris County Historical Society. This beautiful site is a rare opportunity to experience mid-Victorian splendor at its finest. The house is furnished mostly with pieces from the Schermerhorn and Crane-Hone families. Carpeting, wall covering, and decorative paint techniques remain as they were in the 19th century. A National Historic Site, it's part of the NJ Women's History Trail, in recognition of the importance of the Crane and Hone women in both preservation and women's suffrage. Mary Crane Hone donated the house in 1971. She sounds feisty and very interesting. Quoth Mary: "It's high time for all of us interested in historic preservation to face up to the fact that the power and the purse are now in the hands of the government (and) we'll just have to sully our dainty hands with the political approach if we seriously intend to save anything in this threatened Greater Metropolitan Area." Touché!
